How it all began

The Story of Springhill

When we established Springhill in 2003, Karen, Matthew and I originally planned to provide commercial water treatment equipment, particularly commercial water softeners for hotels, council buildings, sports centres and office blocks.

However, living in a farmhouse with its own private water supply, I asked Matthew to install a water filtration system that would provide clean and safe drinking water for our home.

My partner and young family were naturally concerned about drinking, bathing and cooking with water that effectively came from a boggy area on the hillside.

Today, Springhill specialises in helping homeowners, farms, estates and rural businesses improve the safety and reliability of their private water supplies. Since 2003, we have supplied bespoke water treatment systems to hundreds of private homes, farmhouses and barn conversions throughout the UK.

Our expertise has also made us trusted contractors for major organisations and landowners, including The National Trust, Youth Hostel Association, English Heritage and the Forestry Commission. In addition to domestic installations, we install, service and repair private water supply filtration systems for private water companies, caravan parks, country estates and stately homes.

What is it?

What is a Private Water Supply?

A private water supply is any water source that is not connected to the mains water network. Unlike mains water, which is supplied and treated by utility companies such as Yorkshire Water, Northumbrian Water and United Utilities, private water supplies are privately owned and managed by the property owner.

Private water supplies are most commonly found in rural areas and may originate from springs, boreholes, wells, streams or other natural sources. Across Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and Derbyshire, thousands of homes and businesses rely on private water supplies for their daily water needs.

Rural Commercial Water Systems

The Private Water Supply Regulations

The Drinking Water Inspectorate regulates mains water supplies. Local councils are responsible for regulating private water supplies within their area and report to the Drinking Water Inspectorate.

The Private Water Supply Regulations set standards for water quality and wholesomeness. Untreated private water can contain harmful pathogens such as:

  • Giardia
  • Cryptosporidium
  • Campylobacter
