Water is an important part of both the historic landscape and the wider estate infrastructure. The grounds contain extensive lakes and waterways, while public records document private water supplies serving the Castle Howard Estate.

A 2004 water abstraction notice records a private water supply from the Rolling Spring at Henderskelfe, with additional provision from a borehole at Ray Wood during periods of low spring yield.
