UV light water treatment

Ultra violet disinfection (sometimes called UV purification) is the method of choice for protecting the majority of private water supplies from microbiological contamination in the United Kingdom. A UV disinfection system for water treatment kills bacteria (E.coli, Coliforms etc.) mould, algae and virus contamination without adding chemicals – preserving the water’s natural taste and healthy minerals.

Water Testing

We highly recommend having your water tested before installing a UV water filter system. This is because every water supply is different and will come with specific challenges. The combination of filters and treatments needed will vary from location to location. You can have your water professionally tested by us, or test it yourself with a water testing kit from our shop.

UV Disinfection pre-filtration

It is recommended that all UV disinfectors are installed with a pre-filter. This pre filter removes the larger particulate from the water, preventing the effect called “shadowing” whereby bacteria can pass through the water in the “shadow” of small debris. The size of filter is dependent on the water flow and quality of the water. We recommend that a 5 micron filter is used. Where cryptosporidium or giardia are present, a 1 micron filter can be used.

Pictured here is a Stainless steel UV and control box (UV) and pre filter (Filter Housing) installed as part of a larger system to remove iron (Iron Reduction filter and microbiological contamination (UV). The UV bulb needs changing every year and the pre filter every 3 to 6 months dependent on water quality and the amount of water used. To change the filter you need a Spare Filter and a Wrench.
