About Us

The Springhill Private Water Supply

When we set up Springhill in 2003, Karen, Matthew and I had originally planned on providing commercial equipment; in particular, commercial water softeners to places like hotels, council buildings, sports centres and office blocks. However, living in a farmhouse with its own private water supply I had asked Matthew if he could install a water filtration system that would provide clean and safe water.

Clean & Safe

My partner and young family were rightly concerned about drinking, bathing and cooking with water that effectively came from a boggy bit of land on the hillside. The system that Matthew created was and remains extremely effective and became our template for many hundreds of other private water supply filtration systems.

Tried & Tested Filtration

Our range of installations includes UV disinfection, pH correction, iron water filtration, booster pumps and borehole pumps. Over the years we have installed a wider range of water filtration equipment and water pumps in a wide range of properties that includes hundreds of large, medium and small sized domestic properties.

What is a Private Water Supply?

On this page, we will discuss the meaning of the phrase ‘private water supply’. Firstly, a private water supply is a supply not on the ‘mains’ because mains water is drinking water provided by a Utility. The main Utility Companies in the North of England are Yorkshire Water, Northumbrian Water and United Utilities. A private water supply is called ‘private’ as it is privately owned. Most private water supplies in the North of England are located in rural parts of counties such as Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and Derbyshire.

Types of Private Water Supply

There are several types of private water supply. The main types of private supplies are boreholes, springs, streams, wells and rainwater harvesting. There is a big difference between a mains water supply and a private water supply. The main difference being mains and private is that a mains water supply is treated with chlorine whereas a private water supply is untreated. Because the owner of a private water supply does not pay water rates they are solely responsible for treating their water.

The Private Water Supply Regulations

The Drinking Water Inspectorate regulates mains water. Local Councils are responsible for regulating private water supplies in their area as they report to the Drinking Water Inspectorate. The standards for water quality in a private water supply are laid out in the private water supply regulations. The regulations set the standards for wholesomeness because untreated water is very likely to be unwholesomeness. Many private water supplies contain Pathogens like E. coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Campylobacter.
